about propane

Propane — sometimes known as liquefied petroleum gas, or LPG — is a gas normally compressed and stored as a liquid. It is nontoxic, colorless, and virtually odorless; an identifying odor is added so it can be detected. Propane is commonly used for space and water heating, for cooking, and as fuel for engine applications such as forklifts, farm irrigation engines, fleet vehicles, and buses; however, its applications are rapidly growing due to new technology developments. When used as vehicle fuel, propane is known as propane autogas.

propane safety

If you smell gas or are experiencing signs of a gas leak call one of our offices or our emergency number at 1-800-442-4936.

Dial 9-1-1 for immediate assistance.

Know The Signs

  • Smell Test - A rotten egg/skunk smell indicates a possible leak.

  • Irregular/Yellow Flames - Irregular or yellow flames may indicate a problem in appliances. Propane should burn blue in gas appliances. It is common for fireplaces/heaters to have yellow flames.

  • Soot Buildup - There should be no soot buildup around gas appliances, fireplaces, heaters, etc. because propane burns clean. Be sure that gas logs are not out of place. This is a major cause of soot buildup.
